Denver Broncos place Jonathon Cooper on commissioner's exempt list

The Denver Broncos will be without outside linebacker Jonathon Cooper for an indefinite period after the NFL placed him on the commissioner's exempt list. Commissioner Roger Goodell issued the designation following Cooper’s two arrests in June 2026. The initial arrest involved misdemeanor mischief and a domestic violence charge, while a subsequent incident resulted in misdemeanor harassment and protection order violation charges. Under the terms of the list, Cooper is prohibited from practicing or playing with the team while remaining on paid leave. His absence creates a vacancy in the Denver pass rush, which ranked first in the league with 79 sacks last season. The team now faces an early-season schedule that includes six consecutive games against 2025 playoff opponents.
