Denver Broncos waive rookie tight end Justin Joly after preseason

The Denver Broncos released fifth-round draft pick Justin Joly on Sunday following the conclusion of the preseason. Joly became the highest-drafted rookie waived by the franchise since 2005, when the team cut running back Maurice Clarett. Despite recording an 88-yard touchdown reception during the preseason finale, the coaching staff determined the rookie was not yet ready for a spot on the active roster. The move came as a surprise given the rarity of teams parting ways with early-round selections so soon after the draft. Joly did not clear waivers and was claimed by the Miami Dolphins, where he joins a roster that includes tight end Greg Dulcich.
