Derek Carr joins UCLA football staff as adviser to Bob Chesney

Derek Carr has joined UCLA's football staff as a special adviser to head coach Bob Chesney, as announced on August 11, 2026. The former NFL quarterback, who played 11 seasons primarily with the Raiders, will assist in game planning and strategy, with a focus on the quarterbacks. Carr's addition comes at a critical time for UCLA, which seeks to revitalize its football program after struggling in recent seasons. His connection with general manager Darrick Yray, stemming from their time at Fresno State, played a key role in this hiring. Carr is expected to bring significant experience and leadership as the Bruins look to improve their performance following a series of underwhelming seasons.
