Detroit Lions restructure contracts to increase salary cap space for trade options

The Detroit Lions created over $30 million in additional salary cap space by restructuring the contracts of wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown and left tackle Penei Sewell. This move brings the team's total available cap space to $38.2 million ahead of their season opener against the New Orleans Saints. The added flexibility positions the Lions to pursue defensive reinforcements as they manage an injury-depleted secondary. Both safety Brian Branch and safety Kerby Joseph are starting the season on injured reserve and will miss at least the first four games. Analyst Mina Kimes identified Cleveland Browns cornerback Denzel Ward as a potential trade target to address the unit's needs. The NFL midseason trade deadline is scheduled for November 10.
