The German Football Association plans to shift its approach to video assistant refereeing during the upcoming Bundesliga season. DFB head of referees Knut Kircher stated that the primary objective is to empower on-pitch officials and minimize VAR interference. Under the new guidelines, VAR will only intervene when a refereeing error is immediately apparent from the initial camera angle. The league aims to return to a style of game management that emphasizes the authority of the referee on the pitch. While the league will allow VAR to review the validity of second yellow cards, it has declined to adopt all rules used during this summer’s World Cup. Specifically, officials will not use VAR to reverse corner kick decisions, and covering a player's mouth during confrontations will not result in an automatic red card. The DFB seeks to balance this reduced intervention with a continued pursuit of consistency in decision-making.
- •VAR will only intervene for errors clearly visible on the first camera angle.
- •Referees will maintain primary authority over game-management decisions.
- •The Bundesliga will not implement the World Cup rule regarding automatic red cards for covering mouths.
- •VAR can now check the validity of a second yellow card decision.
- •Corner kick decisions remain outside the scope of VAR review.
