Diamondbacks recall Pavin Smith before the matchup against the Rangers

The Arizona Diamondbacks selected the contract of first baseman Pavin Smith from Triple-A Reno ahead of Saturday's game against the Texas Rangers at Chase Field. To accommodate the roster addition, the team optioned catcher Adrian Del Castillo to the minor leagues. Smith previously struggled in the majors earlier this season, hitting.141, but recently posted a 1.109 OPS over his last 13 games in Triple-A. Manager Torey Lovullo stated that the move provides depth at first base and an opportunity for Smith to face right-handed pitching. The Diamondbacks also moved Tyler Locklear to the 60-day injured list as part of ongoing roster adjustments. Brandon Pfaadt takes the mound for Arizona against Texas starter Kumar Rocker in the 5:10 p.m. contest.
