Former East Germany football player Eberhard Vogel died on Tuesday at age 83 following a long illness. His death was announced by his family on Wednesday. Vogel was a prolific left winger who set an East German top-flight record by appearing in 440 matches while scoring 188 goals for Karl-Marx-Stadt and Carl Zeiss Jena. During his international career, he earned 74 caps for East Germany and scored 25 goals. He also competed for the Olympic team, contributing to bronze medal finishes in 1964 and 1972. Beyond his playing days, Vogel transitioned into coaching, where he led under-19 and under-16 teams to European honors and later managed several clubs including Hanover and Magdeburg. He also held a stint as the national team coach for Togo after German reunification in 1990.
