ECB confirms lack of northern Ashes tests in 2027 schedule

No men's Ashes Test will be played in the north of England during the 2027 series. The England and Wales Cricket Board has finalized a schedule that excludes traditional northern venues such as Old Trafford and Headingley. This decision follows a 2023 agreement where a match was moved from the Utilita Bowl in Southampton to Headingley. Hampshire received financial compensation of over £1 million at that time and was subsequently granted a 2027 fixture as part of the arrangement. Current allocations are determined by a new rotation system adopted by the 18 first-class counties and the Marylebone Cricket Club. The ECB intends to return to hosting at least one men's Ashes Test in the north of England starting in 2031. Trent Bridge in Nottingham will serve as the most northerly venue for the 2027 men's series, while Headingley is designated to host the women's Ashes Test.
