World number two Elena Rybakina began her US Open campaign with a 6-3, 6-2 win against wildcard Thea Frodin at Flushing Meadows. The 27-year-old return to competition was marked by a dominant display on serve, as she converted break points to secure the victory despite a late challenge from her opponent. Rybakina previously withdrew from the Cincinnati Masters with a heel injury and entered this tournament with questions regarding her fitness. The match was delayed by rain, but the second seed showed no signs of discomfort during her first appearance since last month. She now progresses to the next round, continuing her pursuit of the world number one ranking. To reach the top spot, Rybakina must advance to the semi-finals in New York.
