Essen and Sunderland maintain historical twinning relationship through football

The cities of Essen, Germany, and Sunderland, England, continue to foster their twinning relationship, which began in 1950. This cultural and sporting alliance is strengthened by a Sunderland supporters' branch in Germany, established by Martin Steffner after a meeting in 2015. Members, including Ian McNee, enjoy sharing their love for Sunderland AFC and support Rot Weiss Essen, a club with historical significance. The German Black Cats have organized yearly trips to Sunderland, enhancing the camaraderie and cultural exchange between the two cities.
