The Football Association has confirmed a new goalkeeper injury trial for the 2026/27 season across English football. The initiative aims to reduce time-wasting and maintain match tempo by requiring coaches to nominate an outfield player to leave the field when a goalkeeper is injured. This player will remain off the field for at least one minute after play resumes. Exemptions exist for cases requiring immediate treatment, such as after fouls or if players collide. The trial will encompass men’s and women’s professional leagues but will not extend below the National League Step 2. It will begin with the 2026/27 Carabao Cup opening round on August 1, as part of broader efforts to increase ball-in-play time.
- •FA to trial goalkeeper injury rule starting August 1.
- •Players removed for one minute after goalkeeper injuries.
- •Exemptions apply for certain medical situations.
- •Trial includes men’s and women’s professional games.
- •Part of wider measures to increase game pace.
