Fact check: Image of Lamine Yamal with Palestine flag and World Cup trophy is fake

Summary

A photo circulating on social media purporting to show Spanish footballer Lamine Yamal draped in a Palestine flag while holding the World Cup trophy is identified as fake. The image emerged after Spain's victory against Argentina in the World Cup final on July 19, 2026. Investigative sources confirm that no credible news outlets support the authenticity of the photo, which bears similarities to genuine images of Yamal celebrating with the trophy but features a significant alteration. Authentic photos show him with a 'Campeones' banner instead. Yamal recently stirred controversy earlier this summer for waving a Palestinian flag during FC Barcelona celebrations.
