FIFA issues life bans to two former soccer federation presidents

FIFA has imposed lifetime bans on two former soccer federation presidents following investigations into financial misconduct. Vincent Cassell, the former leader of the Montserrat soccer federation, faces charges including abuse of position and the misuse of organization funds. Additionally, Bassam Adeel Jaleel, the former president of the Maldives soccer federation, was expelled from the sport for misusing FIFA Covid-19 relief funds for personal gain. FIFA also sanctioned other officials, including a 15-year ban for former Montserrat general secretary Tandica Hughes and a 10-year ban for former Maldives finance director Mohamed Ageel. These disciplinary actions follow years of institutional turmoil within both organizations, which included government-level criminal prosecutions for embezzlement and tax evasion. FIFA previously installed an emergency management team in Montserrat to address the crisis.
