FIFA plans regulation changes following the Julián Álvarez transfer standoff

FIFA will modify Article 17 of its Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players effective January 1, 2027. The move follows a high-profile dispute involving Julián Álvarez, who remained at Atlético Madrid after the club held his release clause at $580 million to block a potential move to Barcelona. This fixed, high-value clause prevented a transfer throughout the most recent window. Under the revised framework, clubs will be required to set release clauses that reflect a player’s real market value rather than using figures designed exclusively to prevent departures. While the new rules aim to provide more flexibility for players to change teams, the policy will not apply retroactively to existing contracts. Consequently, Álvarez will stay with Atlético Madrid until the new regulations take effect, at which point his situation with Barcelona could be revisited.
