FIS updates neutral status rules for Russian and Belarusian winter athletes

The International Ski and Snowboard Federation confirmed that athletes from Russia and Belarus may compete as neutrals for the upcoming winter season. FIS requires participants, coaches, and officials to sign a neutrality declaration as a condition for entry into events. The policy prohibits the display of national symbols, including flags, anthems, and uniforms. This decision follows a December ruling by the Court of Arbitration for Sport that concluded a four-year ban on Russian skiers in international competition. While neutral status permits participation in individual events, the governing body noted that athletes may face difficulties securing visas to enter European nations hosting World Cup races. The policy applies to the upcoming World Cup circuit in Alpine, cross-country, and freestyle skiing, as well as snowboarding, as athletes seek to qualify for the Milan Cortina Olympics.
