Former New York Yankees pitcher Rollie Sheldon dies at age 89

Rollie Sheldon, a member of two World Series-winning New York Yankees teams, died on August 31 in Lee’s Summit, Missouri, at the age of 89. After serving in the U.S. Air Force, where he pitched for their baseball team, he signed with the Yankees in 1960. He made his major league debut in 1961 and played for the organization during their title runs in 1961 and 1962. Over his career, Sheldon also had stints with the Kansas City Athletics and the Boston Red Sox before retiring from professional baseball after the 1966 season. Following his playing career, he worked for Allstate Insurance Corporation until his retirement in 1992. His obituary noted his gratitude for manager Ralph Houk, who provided him the opportunity to play for the Yankees.
