Former Pitt linebacker Gary Tyra discusses the approaching college football season

Elmira Southside graduate Gary Tyra returned to his hometown to discuss the start of the 2026 college football season. Known to many as "Taz" from his collegiate playing career, Tyra was a key member of the 1976 University of Pittsburgh squad that finished with a perfect 12-0 record and a national championship. The linebacker earned his nickname for his aggressive defensive style under the late head coach Johnny Majors. Reflecting on his time in Pittsburgh, he also noted his appearance in the 1975 Sun Bowl, where the Panthers secured a 33-19 victory over Kansas. Tyra expressed enthusiasm for the return of the sport as programs across the country prepare for early September kickoffs. The University of Pittsburgh is scheduled to open its season this Saturday at 12:30 PM against Miami of Ohio.
