Former Sunderland defender Denver Hume has confirmed his retirement from professional football at the age of 28. Hume had not appeared in a match since October 2025 following a bleed on the brain sustained during a training session with Fleetwood Town. The injury, which his then-manager Pete Wild initially described as an innocuous collision, resulted in 11 months of medical uncertainty that ultimately ended his career.
