Former Tennessee football assistant coach Kippy Brown dies at 71

Charles "Kippy" Brown, a longtime football coach who served multiple tenures at the University of Tennessee, died August 31 at age 71. Brown was a standout quarterback at Sweetwater High School before playing at Memphis, where he became the school's first Black quarterback. His coaching career spanned 22 seasons in the NFL, including a Super Bowl XLVIII victory as a Seattle Seahawks assistant in 2014. During his time in Knoxville, he helped establish the program's reputation as "Wide Receiver U" while working under coaches Johnny Majors and Phillip Fulmer. He briefly served as Tennessee's interim head coach in early 2010 after the departure of Lane Kiffin. Brown also spent one season as the head coach of the XFL's Memphis Maniax in 2001 and was inducted into the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame in 2019.
