Former Yankees pitcher Rollie Sheldon dies at age 89

Rollie Sheldon, a pitcher who played on two New York Yankees World Series championship teams during the 1960s, died August 31 at age 89. Over a five-season Major League Baseball career, Sheldon compiled a 38-36 record with a 4.09 ERA while appearing for the Yankees, Kansas City A’s, and Boston Red Sox. A former Air Force veteran, he played collegiate baseball and basketball at Texas A&M and UConn before signing with the Yankees in 1960. He made his major league debut the following year, winning 11 games as a rookie in the Yankees' rotation. Sheldon spent his final season in the majors with the Boston Red Sox in 1966 before finishing his career after a trade to the Cincinnati Reds organization. He is survived by his wife, Shirley, along with two daughters and two granddaughters.
