Former Yankees pitcher Rollie Sheldon dies at age 89

Rollie Sheldon, a right-handed pitcher who played for the New York Yankees during their 1961 and 1962 World Series championship seasons, died on August 31, 2026. He was 89 years old. After playing baseball and basketball at the University of Connecticut and serving in the United States Air Force, Sheldon signed with the Yankees in 1960. He reached the major leagues in 1961, appearing in 35 games with an 11-5 record and a 3.60 ERA. Over the course of his professional career, he also played for the Kansas City Athletics and the Boston Red Sox. He concluded his time in Major League Baseball following the 1966 season with 160 career appearances.
