Freshman Jay Timmons nears starting role at nickel back for Ohio State

Ohio State freshman Jay Timmons is in contention to earn a starting defensive role for the team's season opener against Ball State. Head coach Ryan Day has not yet confirmed the final starting lineup, but Timmons took the majority of first-team repetitions at nickel back during preseason camp. The position became available following the departure of Lorenzo Styles Jr. to the New Orleans Saints. Timmons, a 5-foot-11, 191-pound recruit, impressed coaches and teammates with his physical play and instincts during practice sessions. If he starts against Ball State, he will become the first Ohio State freshman to open on defense since Denzel Burke in 2021. Day stated that playing time will depend on individual performance and the trust players have established with the coaching staff during the transition to the new season.
