GAA trials 24 hurling rule changes during October Fitzgibbon Cup league

The GAA Hurling Expert Advisory Group will trial 24 proposed rule changes during the Fitzgibbon Cup league this October. The testing period follows a comprehensive survey of 8,500 participants, including players, media, and supporters. Proposed amendments include awarding two points for sideline cuts, requiring puck-outs to travel at least 45 metres, and limiting handpass sequences to prevent consecutive play. Additional changes address ruck reduction through stricter tackle enforcement and allow specific sideline personnel to enter the pitch during breaks. The Games Intelligence Unit will monitor these matches to gather data on the effectiveness of each modification. According to GAA president Jarlath Burns, the evidence-led process intends to evolve the sport while maintaining its unique characteristics. Successful trials could eventually be submitted to the Standing Committee on Playing Rules for permanent ratification.
