Genk coach Jess Thorup plans to protect Lucca Brughmans after Liverpool transfer

Liverpool secured the signing of 18-year-old goalkeeper Lucca Brughmans at the conclusion of the summer transfer window. The deal, which could reach £30 million with add-ons, allows the stopper to remain at Genk on loan for the 2026/27 season to gain senior experience. Genk head coach Jess Thorup confirmed the arrangement, stating it remains the optimal path for the player's development before his eventual move to Anfield. Thorup intends to manage Brughmans’ workload and provide protection as the teenager adjusts to his heightened profile and first-team responsibilities. The goalkeeper has started all five of Genk's league matches this campaign, including a clean sheet in Sunday's draw against Anderlecht. Brughmans will join Liverpool next year, where he is expected to serve as an understudy to Giorgi Mamardashvili.
