Geno Smith held out of Jets' game against Bucs due to ankle injury

Geno Smith did not play in the New York Jets' preseason opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on August 15, 2026, due to an ankle issue. Head coach Aaron Glenn stated that Smith was a late scratch and described his ankle as sore, resulting from an injury during joint practices earlier in the week. Smith was acquired this offseason to be the Jets' starting quarterback. With Smith sidelined, rookie Cade Klubnik started and led the team’s only touchdown drive, outperforming backup Bailey Zappe, who threw two interceptions. Glenn indicated Smith is day-to-day and being held out as a precaution.
