The Global Fight League (GFL) will host its inaugural event on December 18 at Club Atletico Lanus in Buenos Aires. The event will feature a matchup between the Buenos Aires Gauchos and the Miami Monsters, with former UFC contender Marlon Moraes confirmed as part of the Miami roster. GFL aims to mark a new era in MMA after a challenging start, including cancellations of earlier planned events in May 2025. The promotion plans to reveal additional roster details on Monday. GFL was founded by Darren Owen, who previously worked with the World Series of Fighting.

"Marlon Moraes | Cooper Neill, Getty Images The Global Fight League is once again ready to take on the world of MMA. On Thursday, the GFL dropped an official announcement for its debut event, set to take place at Club Atletico Lanus in Buenos Aires on Dec. 18. Following the league’s team format, the event is set to feature the Buenos Aires Gauchos welcoming the Miami Monsters to Argentina. View this post on Instagram It is not yet known which fighters are booked for the event, though former UFC title contender and longtime MMA veteran Marlon Moraes (24-13-1) was recently announced as part of the Miami Monsters roster. Moraes, 38, made a successful comeback this past August with a unanimous decision win over Maximiliano Perez to snap a seven-fight losing streak across stints in the UFC and PFL dating back to 2020. “A new era in mixed martial arts officially begins,” the promotion wrote in an Instagram caption. “After years of vision, determination, and building something truly different, we are proud to announce the first official event in Global Fight League history.” The social media post mentions that roster reveals are set for Monday. GFL is the brainchild of former World Series of Fighting executive Darren Owen, who launched the promotion in 2025. Several big name fighters soon joined Owen, including former UFC champions Tyron Woodley, Chris Weidman, Luke Rockhold, Anthony Pettis, and Holly Holm, along with numerous other notable names from the MMA world. Unfortunately for GFL, the league failed to get off the ground after announcing a pair of events to take place on May 24 and 25. The events were subsequently cancelled and veteran signing Urijah Faber later revealed that Owen and the organization may have been fudging the numbers when it came to how much money they were actually putting into the project. According to GFL’s latest statement, Owen and company remain undeterred: To everyone who has believed in the vision and supported the journey, this moment is for you.
