Harrison Smith returns to the Minnesota Vikings roster for 2026 season

The Minnesota Vikings officially signed veteran safety Harrison Smith to a one-year contract ahead of the 2026 season. Smith, who did not participate in training camp or the preseason, remains under team control as Minnesota prepares for its Week 1 opener against the Green Bay Packers on September 13. Wide receiver Justin Jefferson expressed support for his teammate's return, citing the veteran's energy and leadership. Head coach Kevin O’Connell noted that Smith is in physical shape and has begun integrated team activities following his extended offseason. The team hopes the addition of Smith will bolster a defense looking to improve upon last season's nine-win campaign with Kyler Murray now at quarterback. Despite initial speculation regarding his status, the safety's locker remained intact throughout the summer, providing an early indication to teammates of his potential return.
