Harvey Childers, Mississippi basketball coaching legend, dies at 87

Harvey Childers, a renowned basketball coach in Mississippi, passed away on July 23 at the age of 87. Over his 39-year coaching career, Childers recorded a remarkable 1,013 wins and led several high school teams, including New Albany, to MHSAA championships in 1977 and 1985. He also coached at Northeast Mississippi Community College, where he achieved a national runner-up finish in the 1989 NJCAA Tournament. Childers was inducted into multiple halls of fame, including the Mississippi Association of Coaches Hall of Fame in 1995. His legacy continues with the annual Harvey Childers Classic Tournament hosted by Northeast Mississippi Community College.
