Hechicero, McGuinness, and O'Reilly advance in AEW Continental Cup

The Continental Challenge Cup first round concluded on AEW Collision (Aug. 15, 2026). There was a trifecta of interesting matchups, which included a pair of teammate versus teammate bouts. Conglomeration pals Kyle O’Reilly and Roderick Strong duked it out, Callis Family goons Brian Cage and Hechicero threw hands, and technical experts Katsuyori Shibata and Nigel McGuinness dueled in a chess match. First up was Hechicero sneaking out the win over Cage. The strongman executed tremendous power moves to control the action, such as a deadlift suplex into the ring. The Alchemist used wizardry on the mat to trap the Machine in submissions. In the end, Hechicero ducked a discus lariat to spike Cage with a flying guillotine. The masked man transitioned from a crucifix into a high stack pin for the win. McGuinness engaged Shibata in a display of skill. Shibata had the upper hand often, but Nigel always had a trick up his sleeve. One example was Shibata using a sleeper to slow down Nigel. Shibata released the hold to go for a penalty kick. That is often one of Shibata’s go-to sequences. Nigel had it scouted and kicked Shibata in the ankle to block the PK. Another example was the finish. Victory was in Shibata’s grasp on a sleeper. When hope seemed lost to escape, Nigel kept his composure to roll over the top for a pin. O’Reilly and Strong took center stage for the main event of the evening. They put on a barnburner of action without holding anything back. The pace became a battle of attrition with each man in pain. O’Reilly was quick thinking to catch O’Reilly off-guard by rolling for an armbar then switching to a pin. After the loss, Strong snapped to shove O’Reilly down. Strong immediately regret that outburst in the heat of the moment. He apologized to his friend, and all was forgiven with a hug. The quarterfinals are set for the AEW Continental Challenge Cup. The list includes Claudio Castagnoli, Orange Cassidy, Eddie Kingston, Jay White, Jon Moxley, Hechicero, Nigel McGuinness, and Kyle O’Reilly. The bracket is a blind draw, and matchups will be revealed in a selection special on Monday night through the AEW YouTube channel. One issue though. Commentary mentioned the Nigel suffered an injury.
