Houston Astros rest Yordan Alvarez after he turns ankle against Philadelphia

Houston Astros designated hitter Yordan Alvarez missed Friday’s series opener against the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field. Alvarez sustained the injury to his right ankle while running the bases during Thursday’s game against the Philadelphia Phillies. Manager Joe Espada described the slugger as day-to-day and noted that imaging was not deemed necessary for the injury. Although Alvarez remained out of the starting lineup for the opener, Espada did not rule out his availability as a substitute. The team opted to prioritize recovery on the artificial turf in Florida. Entering the series, the Astros held a three-game lead in the American League West with 15 games remaining in the regular season.
