Houston Texans stop contract negotiations with C.J. Stroud until offseason

The Houston Texans will not negotiate a new contract with C.J. Stroud during the current season. General manager Nick Caserio set a Week one deadline for an extension, and officials indicated no agreement was reached before that cutoff. The team previously exercised the fifth-year option on Stroud’s contract, keeping him under team control through April 2027. Stroud, who recorded 4,100 yards and 23 touchdowns during his rookie year, has seen his performance fluctuate in subsequent seasons. He threw 19 touchdowns and eight interceptions in 2025 while missing three games due to a concussion. Ball security and pass protection have emerged as primary concerns, as Stroud totaled seven turnovers across two 2025 playoff games and led the league with 52 sacks taken during the 2024 season.
