Ilia Topuria faces Justin Gaethje at UFC Freedom 250 on White House lawn

On Sunday night, Justin Gaethje closed the show at UFC White House in epic fashion, giving the American fans something to celebrate as he battered Ilia Topuria, claiming the undisputed lightweight title when Topuria’s corner threw in the towel after the fourth round. It’s the crown jewel in the career of the most exciting fighter to ever step into a cage, and a performance that will be talked about for ages. Sunday’s main event saw Gaethje deliver the performance of his life, battering the undefeated Ilia Topuria en route to a fourth-round knockout win to unify his interim title with Topuria’s and complete his long-awaited climb to undisputed UFC lightweight champion. For his effort, Gaethje was awarded not only the Fight of the Night award, but a Performance of the Night bonus as well. For the historic UFC White House event, the promotion increased the Fight of the Night bonus from its usual $100,000 to $400,000, and the Performance of the Night bonus from $100,000 to $425,000. That means an extra $825,000 for Gaethje. As one half of the Fight of the Night, Topuria also receives a cool $400,000 consolation prize. The other Performance of the night went to Ciryl Gane for his second-round knockout of former two-division champion Alex Pereira. “Poatan” was attempting to become the first UFC fighter ever to win titles in three divisions, but Gane instead defeated him to become interim heavyweight champion a second time and claim a $425,000 bonus. All seven of Sunday’s fights ended via knockout, meaning the following five winners also received a mandatory $25,000 finish bonus: Sean O’Malley Josh Hokit Mauricio Ruffy Bo Nickal Diego Lopes Gaethje has now won Fight of the Night 11 times and Performance of the Night six times, giving him 17 bonuses earned in 16 UFC appearances.

Words could barely describe Gaethje’s epic battle with Topuria that capped off Sunday’s historic show, but “The Highlight” had social media absolutely buzzing after scoring a massive upset win over the previously undefeated Topuria. Gaethje entered UFC White House as the interim champion, with a pair of failed attempts to claim the undisputed title on his résumé, but this time he would not be denied as he battered Topuria with his trademark striking, survived a couple of scary moments where it looked like Topuria would come out on top, and outlasted “El Matador” until the Spaniard’s corner stopped the bout at the end of the fourth round. Topuria put on a valiant performance, but he wore the accumulating damage on his face as the bout progressed, to the point that it was almost stopped at the end of Round 3 when it sounded like Topuria’s corner told the ringside physician that Topuria couldn’t see. Somehow, the bout was allowed to continue, so Gaethje needed another five minutes to put an exclamation point on a performance for the ages. Round 1 They meet in the center of the cage for Marc Goddard’s final instructions, and they touch gloves. Gaethje with jabs early, and a leg kick. Topuria with a calf kick. Gaethje fires back with an uppercut and head kick. Gaethje connects a right and Topuria fires back with a right hand! Topuria with two right hands, but Gaethje responds! Topuria lands another right hand! Gaethje lands an uppercut. Two minutes have gone by so Topuria’s two-minute prediction is gone. But he’s still hurting Gaethje with right hands! They jab each other at the same time, and Topuria continues to march forward. Topuria’s right eye is covered in blood. Gaethje’s jabs continue to land. Gaethje combos an uppercut and right hand. Another right hand! And head kick! Topuria fires back, though, and they brawl in the middle of the cage. WOW! Gaethje with a right hand, and it’s a bar fight! Topuria works the body now and Gaethje is hurt. Again! WOW! Incredible first round! MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9, Topuria. Round 2 Topuria’s face as round two starts clearly shows he’s been in a wild fight, man. And Gaethje starts with a right hand over the top. They trade violently again! What a fight! The doctor is brought back to check his eye again, and they somehow convinces the doctor to go away and the fight continues. WOW! Round 4 Fight continues… this is incredible. Right hand for Gaethje! And he throws Topuria down, and knees in the clinch. Topuria with the body shots now! Topuria’s face is a mess. Gaethje’s uppercut lands again. Jumping knee for Gaethje! Topuria just won’t give up, man. Topuria has the mount! But Gaethje is back up almost immediately and they are trading bombs again. Topuria with another takedown but this time Gaethje sprawls. Not enough time to get the finish but enough to land a knee to the body and again hurt Topuria. MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9 Gaethje (38-38 draw). WOW! WHAT? THE FIGHT IS OVER! After a scare of thunderstorms and high wind, the historic UFC card is underway on the South Lawn of the White House in D.C. In the main event, UFC lightweight champion Ilia Topuria makes his long-awaited return to face UFC interim champion Justin Gaethje. Topuria has yet to taste defeat in his legendary career, but Gaethje promises to change that tonight. Two-time UFC division champion Alex Pereira hopes to add a historic third UFC belt to his collection when he squares off against UFC interim heavyweight champion Ciryl Gane in the co-main event. The winner will face UFC heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall in the future after he recovers from eye injuries in his last fight against Gane. Former UFC champion Sean O’Malley battles Aiemann Zahabi in a key bantamweight contest also on the main card. There will be seven fights total on the UFC Freedom 250 fight card.
