Illinois defeats UAB in season opener behind efficient offense

Illinois opened its 2026 college football season with a 42-21 home win against UAB. Quarterback Katin Houser led the offensive effort, completing 13 of 17 passes for 183 yards and three touchdowns while adding a rushing score. Collin Dixon recorded six catches for 70 yards and two touchdowns to pace the receiving unit, while Ca’Lil Valentine and Laughery combined for 117 rushing yards. Despite the win, the Illini defense allowed UAB to rack up 413 total yards and control the time of possession for over 41 minutes. The team recorded one sack and a late interception by Ismael Kante. Illinois now prepares to travel to Durham, N.C., to face the Duke Blue Devils.
