Indianapolis Colts name Anthony Richardson as backup quarterback for Week 1

Indianapolis Colts head coach Shane Steichen announced on Wednesday that Anthony Richardson will serve as the team’s backup quarterback for the Week 1 game. The decision follows a summer competition between Richardson and Riley Leonard. According to general manager Chris Ballard, Richardson earned the role based on his performance during preseason games, specifically his efficiency in two-minute drill scenarios against New England and Atlanta. Coaches noted that his ability to extend plays provided a tactical advantage for the offense. Richardson concluded his preseason play completing 21 of 33 passes for 250 yards with one interception, while also recording 69 rushing yards. The coaching staff indicated that Richardson displayed more poise and comfort in the offensive scheme throughout the summer compared to previous seasons.
