Iowa marching band plans tributes for Derek Phillips during Iowa State game

The Iowa Hawkeyes marching band will honor band member Derek Phillips during the upcoming game against Iowa State following his death this week. Phillips died Tuesday after suffering sudden cardiac arrest on the field during Iowa's 40-0 victory over Northern Illinois last Saturday. Tributes scheduled for the Iowa State game include a moment of silence and a halftime performance of the show Phillips helped prepare, titled 50 Years of The Muppet Show. During the performance of "Rainbow Connection," the band will form the name "Derek" on the field. Additionally, the band will maintain an empty leader position for the H1 squad for the remainder of the year. Band members and staff plan to wear black ribbons on their uniforms throughout the game to mark the loss.
