Iowa State re-dedicates football stadium as Jack Trice Stadium

On August 30, 1997, Iowa State University officially re-dedicated its football stadium as Jack Trice Stadium. This recognition honors Jack Trice, the first Black athlete at Iowa State, who died in 1923 from injuries sustained during a game. After a lengthy campaign initiated in the 1970s to name the stadium after Trice, the change reflects significant historical acknowledgment, making it the only Division 1 FBS stadium named in honor of a Black student-athlete.
