Jack Nicklaus authorized short-distance golf ball for unique course project

Jack Nicklaus commissioned a custom golf ball that travels half the distance of a standard ball in 1982. Developed by MacGregor for The Britannia Resort in Grand Cayman, the ball allowed for a shorter golf course layout and performed similarly to regular balls in short-game scenarios. The initiative was part of Nicklaus's plan to adapt the game as golfers began hitting longer drives. The modified distance ball was initially successful but lost popularity as players preferred standard distances. Golf's governing bodies are now considering a rollback of distance standards for the future.
