Jackson State football begins the 2026 season ranked No. 4 in the preseason HBCU FCS coaches poll, released on July 29. Following a 9-3 season in which they finished second in the SWAC, the Tigers trail South Carolina State, Prairie View A&M, and Alabama State in the rankings. Jackson State's predicted finish for the SWAC East is second. Other Mississippi teams in the poll include Alcorn State at No. 10 and Mississippi Valley State receiving a vote. The Tigers will kick off their season against Tennessee State on August 29.
