Roman entered Iowa triumphantly. Keeping in line with SummerSlam, this sounded like a new Roman. He was humble to a degree, gave props to Seth Rollins to a degree, and let the Iowans in attendance sing Seth’s song. He puffed out his chest over the fact he defeated Seth by himself. LA has a point. Despite Roman’s apparent new leaf, he never defeated LA fair or square. While not as big a thorn in his side as Seth, LA has the ability to annoy and get under Roman’s skin simply because he exists. Now, Roman of course dismissed LA. How dare LA call him a fraud when Mr. Knight calls himself a megastar while rocking a Walmart watch. Ouch. As someone in the market for a very expensive watch, and who can’t pronounce the watch Roman is wearing, I understand LA’s struggle. But, again, that talk only goes so far with LA. He won’t let a few verbal jabs stop him from going full force. Which flowed perfectly into what happened next with The Bloodline and the point of this section. Roman chastised his boys for not handling LA. I like seeing Roman vacillate between going back to the old him and walking this new path. He’s clearly torn but told them not to touch LA. Instead, he pointed some frustration in Jacob’s direction for thinking anyone outside of his blood family is family. Royce Keys isn’t his brother, nor should be act like it. The message was clear: take Royce out. One can look at this in a couple ways: Either Roman wanted to test Jacob to see how far his loyalty goes, or he wanted Jacob to eliminate a tie to his past that might threaten his present and future with The Bloodline. Either way, it made for great theater as Jacob challenged Royce to a street fight. And then, well, they street fought. It was the perfect match for two guys who look like these two but also have the backstory. It made for a more emotional watch as two guys who love each other did everything possible to stop the other from walking. Jacob, of course, got the win and then went the extra mile. As per usual, he’s always the one who steps up when Roman needs someone to show they can. I hope this puts Royce in a great position when he comes back from whatever injury this is and for however long one sits on the shelf after coughing up blood. Dark ending for Raw as the Tribal Chief saluted his cousin for stomping out someone he saw as family. B-Sides Ethan Page is a fantastic heel. I don’t know how high he can go but I love his heel work. He and Je’Von Evans tangoed in a very well done opening match that highlighted Ethan’s edge and Je’Von’s heart. What I love most about his heeldom (real word) is how he uses his smarts for nefarious means. Ethan worked Je’Von’s back through different suplexes, the edge of the announce table, and just clubbing him into the fetal position. The best moment came when Je’Von went to the middle rope to get bouncy, and Ethan shook the rope, which put Je’Von flat on his back again. It was brilliant and told so much about who All Ego is as a character in and outside the ring. Ironically, his heel nature is why he took an L. Ethan turned his back on Je’Von to take the pad off the turnbuckle. He got into a back and forth with the ref, and missed Je’Von getting back into the ring. The Young OG leapfrogged, yes, leapfrogged, over Ethan and the ref, jumped to the top turnbuckle, and hit Ethan with an OG Cutter. Beautiful ending to a beautiful short match that did a lot. Speaking of doing a lot, Big Cass made his big return with a big boot to Je’Von’s big skull. I fell in love with the word, sue me. Cass went after one of the biggest fish in the pond to make a statement. We’ll see how that works out for both men. The crowd didn’t react much, possibly because eight years is an eternity in sports entertainment wrestling. Even his promo later in the evening lacked some oomph. What is oomph? It’s a word that means excitement or energetic. Sol Ruca isn’t finished with Judgment Day. That much is clear during and after her match with Roxanne Perez. Why is it clear? Well, the match ended in a DQ thanks to the usual Judgment Day shenanigans. This hopefully sets up a rematch with Raquel Rodriguez, which brings me to an inconsistency in wrestling storytelling that always bugs me. Why do some people go to management after getting screwed over in a title match but others don’t? Sol has a legitimate complaint and reason for another match with Raquel, but there’s no sign of her taking that case to Adam Pearce. Hopefully this means a rematch is in order though that wasn’t the focus of the segment. Guess who showed up after Liv Morgan and friends wrecked Sol? Becky Lynch. And what Becky said… She wants Liv Morgan. She’s not here for seconds, she’s here for the main feast. And she thinks Liv is a glorified valet; someone more adept at carrying around the title than actually defending it. But guess who also wants Liv’s championship? Besides any woman reading this, of course. Stephanie Vaquer is back and she wants vengeance. She made a beeline for Liv, all while Becky watched. When Judgment Day scattered like roaches, Becky and Stephanie got into a staredown. Both women want the same thing and it’s clear they’ll have go to through each other to get it. This was a great segment that flowed together beautifully while establishing very high stakes. Becky vs. Stephanie sounds like a hell of a good time. WWE wants me to fall for the “Brock Lesnar might be gone” hype package again. No, sir. I will not fall for the banana in the tailpipe another time. But the hype package led to an interesting segment between Oba Femi and Paul E. Oba asked Paul to thank Brock for everything the Beast said about him. Paul not only said he’d be honored to do so, but congratulated the Ruler on his success. I wondered if they might pair Oba with Paul at SummerSlam. It didn’t happen but maybe it’s in the cards, although I don’t believe Oba needs it. Like Batista, he walks alone and is better for it. That segued right into Oba’s triumphant promo. He gave a lot of props to Brock and made sure anyone who wants to step up can get it. He realized Brock challenged him not out of pride, but as a test. Oba passed that test and anyone who wants to test him will…get tested. Once again, I fell in love with a word and wanted to see how far I could stretch it. Right on cue, Bron Breakker entered with the rest of The Vision. Bron plowed through Joe Hendry then asked Paul E. if he knew of Oba’s whereabouts. Bron suspects what I suspected about Paul and Oba working together. Bron vs. Oba sounded awesome several months ago. Now? It feels moot since there’s no way Oba should lose to Bron at this stage. That says a lot about how low Bron’s fallen on the totem pole. Alpha Academy still isn’t finished with The Vision. Akira Tozawa saved Joe from the post match beatdown and avenged his pal Otis. Once again, this whole thing has to end with the Academy getting the win but that only undercuts what they’re doing with The Vision, Austin Theory in particular. Outside of giving the audience false hope, I’m not sure where this is going. Chad Gable cut a great babyface promo. It charted his course in WWE to this point, thanked everyone for riding with him through the good times and the Shorty G times, then bigged up Penta for just being Penta. And I’m a sucker for a Shawshank Redemption reference, so props to Chad for telling us all how he crawled through a river of crap to get to the other side. He was Dante going through the Inferno and Purgatory to finally hit paradise. He didn’t say all that, I just couldn’t help but see his Shawshank reference and raise him a Dante reference. But I really digress. Penta came to the ring and they stood side-by-side until Dirty Dom and JD McDonagh showed up to ruin the party. We got a satisfying impromptu tag that saw the good guys thankfully triumph over Judgment Day. Is it just me or does Judgment Day need a refresh or a breakup now? It feels like they’ve accomplished all they can as a group as currently constituted. An entertaining post-SummerSlam episode of Raw that checked a lot of boxes for me. I liked the bookend with Roman, the Oba and Paul bits, and the intrigue in the Women’s division. What say you, Cagesiders?
