- 3:05 PMCageside Seats — Jake Hager required additional surgery to reattach retina from brutal Power Slap injury
"Jake Hager suffered a downright gruesome injury during Power Slap 23 at the (literal) hand of Johnny Magna on September 18. As soon as Magna landed a blow across the former WWE and AEW star’s face, blood immediately began pouring out of Hager’s eye. Soon, it was announced Hager had sustained a globe fracture and would need surgery. So brutal was the injury that Power Slap co-owner Dana White wouldn’t show replays of the hit. “That’s probably the worst injury we’ve had in the UFC, in Power Slap, anything,” White later said. Now, it’s been revealed that Hager recently had to undergo another surgery in order to address injuries sustained from the Magna slap. Patricia Blackburn, Hager’s fiancé and fellow Power Slap competitor, told Slap News that the man known as Jack Swagger in WWE also had a detached retina. “It was discovered this week that Jake had a detached retina, he underwent surgery to reattach, which doctors have said went better than expected,” Slap News said in a recent social media post. “Send your love and prayers to Jake and Patricia as they navigate a very sensitive and unpredictable recovery.” Hager is currently halfway through a six-fight deal he signed with Power Slap, however it’s not clear if he will be able to make good on the rest of those dates given the severity of the eye injury. His record with the promotion is 1-2. Hager won his debut in April against Devon Jenkins with a third round knockout and called out his former boss at AEW, yelling towards a camera: “F**k you, Tony Khan!” Hager subsequently lost his second Power Slap outing against fellow former pro wrestler Amanpreet Singh in July before the more recent loss against Magna last month. What do you think about the latest update regarding Hager’s injury? Should he step back from Power Slap and consider a pro wrestling return instead? Let us know in the comments.
