Jeff O’Neill questions Edmonton Oilers' standing as Stanley Cup contenders

Former NHL player Jeff O’Neill stated that the Edmonton Oilers do not qualify as Stanley Cup contenders entering the 2026-27 season. Speaking on TSN Overdrive, O’Neill argued that while Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl remain among the league’s elite, the team’s overall defensive structure, goaltending, and depth are insufficient for a championship run. Jamie McLennan echoed these concerns, noting that the team has struggled with defensive zone coverage. The Oilers underwent significant personnel changes this offseason, including the hiring of head coach Mike Babcock, the departure of Darnell Nurse to San Jose, and the addition of Frederik Andersen, Tristan Jarry, and Shakir Mukhamadullin. Despite these moves, O’Neill maintained that the organization has not earned the benefit of the doubt following an early playoff exit against the Anaheim Ducks last season.
