Joaquin Niemann penalized two strokes for club throw at U.S. Open

Joaquin Niemann received a two-stroke penalty for throwing a club on the sixth hole during the first round of the U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club. The incident occurred as he struggled with his tee shots, ultimately scoring an 11 on the par-4 hole. This penalty marks the first application of a new USGA rule regarding serious misconduct. Niemann was even par before the disruptive hole, where he did not manage to get the ball into play until his fifth shot. He signed for a total score of 78 after his first round.
