John Cena confirmed that WWE has finalized the structure for the upcoming John Cena Classic tournament. Speaking at Fan Expo Canada, the wrestler stated that he currently holds specific information regarding the event but is under instructions to keep the details confidential for now. The tournament, announced at Backlash in May, will feature a competition between WWE NXT stars and main roster talent, with the winner determined by audience voting. The concept was inspired by matches at Saturday Night's Main Event last December that featured athletes including Oba Femi, Je'Von Evans, and Sol Ruca. While an official venue has yet to be announced, rumors suggest the event could take place on December 12. Cena previously noted his intent to implement measures to prevent the fan voting process from being compromised.

"We’ve had some fun with John Cena’s “big announcement” from May’s Backlash premium live event, The John Cena Classic. It wasn’t hard to do and we certainly weren’t alone in cracking wise. As pitched, it’s a night of matches rather than a tournament that will nonetheless crown a champion, and happen at some undetermined point in the future, maybe its own event, maybe an existing one. But Cena’s heart does seem to be in the right place, and his logic sound… other than in the widely-panned “champ who doesn’t have to win his or her match” idea. He wants to give the spotlight to WWE talent who don’t often get a chance to shine, or developmental system prospects and NXT wrestlers who haven’t had an opportunity to wrestle on the main roster at all. In the process, maybe John Cena Classic entrants “grab the brass” ring, or maybe the company realizes they should have put that ring within their grasp earlier. If so, it’s a win-win for contractor and employer. So despite the jokes, we’re happy to hear that Cena and WWE have his Classic all figured out. He said so at Fan Expo Canada: “As far as the John Cena Classic goes, I can’t say nothing right now. Normally — so I don’t want to leave you without an answer — normally, I want to say, ‘We’re figuring out the details.’ I’ll say this: we have all the details.“ We might make jokes about this part, though… “You just gotta hang in there with me, because they want me to keep it a secret until it’s time to say it. But we got a lot of information we’re going to dump on you. It just ain’t going to be today. I’m very excited about it. I really am, I really am excited.” Especially if we go too much longer without hearing some of those details, Acme-man.
