John Schreiber joins the Yankees as Monroe regional athletes compete

The New York Yankees claimed relief pitcher John Schreiber off waivers from the Kansas City Royals on Aug. 31. Schreiber, a Gibraltar Carlson graduate, holds a 3.64 career ERA over eight seasons and moves to a team currently chasing the Tampa Bay Rays for the American League East lead. In local prep sports, Monroe high school tennis secured a 7-1 win over St. Mary Catholic Central on Sept. 1. Meanwhile, the Ida and Dundee volleyball programs both finished 3-1 during LCAA pool play on Tuesday. Monroe freshman swimmer Karis Beaton qualified for the MISCA meet after winning two events, helping her team sweep victories over Erie Mason-Ida and Tecumseh. Additionally, the Erie Mason boys cross country team earned a runner-up finish at the Addison Kuenner Invitational.
