Jose Alvarado struggles with poor stats and luck for Phillies

Summary

Jose Alvarado of the Phillies is experiencing a challenging season in 2026, posting a 6.58 ERA and a -0.5 bWAR, making him one of the least valuable pitchers on the team. Despite a middle-of-the-pack 3.91 ERA for the bullpen, Alvarado's performance stands out negatively due to high slugging percentages and poor groundball rates. He has allowed 11 earned runs in his last 12 innings, showcasing ongoing issues with consistency. However, metrics suggest he is unlucky, with a FIP of 3.71 indicating better underlying performance than his ERA reflects. Alvarado's next outing will be critical to assess if he can turn around his season.
