Josh Dobbs named starting QB for Lions against Commanders in preseason

Josh Dobbs will start at quarterback for the Detroit Lions in their preseason game against the Washington Commanders on Saturday, Aug. 22. Lions coach Dan Campbell confirmed that starting quarterback Jared Goff will not play, having sat out of preseason games since 2022. Dobbs, signed on Aug. 9 following Teddy Bridgewater's retirement, has limited preseason experience, previously playing only three series in a game against the Cincinnati Bengals. Dobbs will split reps with undrafted rookie Luke Altmyer, who has been mainly taking backup reps since the start of training camp. The competition for the backup quarterback position remains ongoing between Dobbs and Altmyer.
