Judge refuses bail for Joey Barton ahead of 2027 assault trial

Former footballer Joey Barton remains in custody after a judge refused his latest bail application at Liverpool Crown Court. The 44-year-old faces a charge of causing grievous bodily harm with intent following an alleged altercation at the Huyton and Prescot Golf Club on 8 March. The complainant, Kevin Lynch, reportedly sustained serious eye injuries during the incident. Judge David Potter previously adjourned the trial until 8 March, 2027, and ruled that Barton must be remanded in custody until that date. Barton appeared via videofilm from HMP Liverpool to receive the court's decision. He is scheduled to attend a further pre-trial hearing on 11 December. The legal proceedings are expected to last two weeks.
