Kansas prepares for Missouri football game using historical Civil War themes

The University of Kansas is framing its Friday football game against the University of Missouri around the shared Civil War history of the two states. A pregame hype video narrated by Gilbert Brown categorizes the rivalry as a conflict between heroes and villains, referencing 19th-century figures such as John Brown and William Quantrill. The institutions share nicknames with deep ties to the border conflict between Kansas and Missouri, which saw significant violence prior to and during the Civil War. While both schools played annually as conference opponents for decades, the series became sporadic following Missouri's departure from the Big 12 in 2012. Last year, Missouri won 42-31 in the first meeting between the programs in over a decade. Friday's game at the University of Kansas marks the final scheduled meeting between the two rivals until 2031.
