Knappa and Astoria cross country teams open seasons with strong performances

Track & FieldLocal cross country teams began their seasons on Friday, Aug. 28, with notable finishes at meets across Oregon. The Knappa boys team placed third out of 30 teams at a meet at Western Oregon, finishing behind McMinnville and Corvallis. Junior Rowdy Justus led the Loggers with a fourth-place overall finish and a personal best time of 8:44.04. Meanwhile, the Astoria Fishermen participated in the Valiant Opener hosted by Valley Catholic. Led by strong performances from their freshman class, both the Astoria boys and girls squads finished in second place. Grady Tillotson paced the boys with a sixth-place finish, while Ila Canessa and Mavis Allen led the girls. The Knappa team prepares for the Ultimook Race scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 5.
