Lamont Roach and William Zepeda prepare for WBC title fight this weekend

From a packed public weigh-in to boxing's biggest names showing up just to watch, fight week made one thing clear: Roach vs. Zepeda is must-see.

Will it be Lamont Roach or William Zepeda leaving with the WBC lightweight title on Saturday?

Will Roach show up in form after a pair of exceptionally frustrating draws in his last two fights, and even if he’s at his best, can he hold off the heavy volume punching of Zepeda? Roach vs Zepeda: Recent Form by Scott Christ Lamont Roach was just sort of strolling along, in a sense, having a decent pro boxing career, and then his last two fights happened. Being honest, I never thought Roach (25-1-3, 10 KO) had true top-level ability. I just never thought I saw that in his prospect days, or his “getting a little too old to be treated like a 20 year old prospect” days. I wasn’t at all surprised that he lost to Jamel Herring in 2019, and what he did to rebound from that wasn’t all that eye-catching, even though he did win, ostensibly, a world title. His last two fights really could have been wins over Tank Davis and Pitbull Cruz, though. Not that those guys have no flaws or anything, but neither performance was a fluke when both of them happened like that. Maybe he’s peaked in the last two, and it’s that simple. This is a guy who went close with Hector Luis Garcia, who was good but not great. He lost to Herring. He’s had other fights that ran a little closer than you’d expect of some proper top talent. But maybe with him it’s less about pure talent than just boxing smart, preparing well, and having the right plans, then executing. That approach to success describes far more world champions, and some damn good ones, than “well, he had unbelievable gifts and raw ability”-type super-talents. He is a hell of a good fighter at the very least. Zepeda (33-1, 27 KO) really burst onto the scene in 2021, taking Hector Tanajara apart to a degree that Tanajara’s career has not recovered and doesn’t seem likely to ever go where it was once hoped it would. Zepeda kept being fun to watch as he trounced carefully-chosen veteran opponents over the next three years, which was fine, he was still developing and he did stay active. He struggled with the style matchup against Tevin Farmer in a pair of very close fights — both wins for Zepeda — in 2024-25, and then was just beaten wide by Shakur Stevenson last July, and Shakur didn’t play that fight safe, either. Now, after a year off, he goes in there with another opponent who is far more technician than slugger. Roach vs Zepeda: Style Matchup by Patrick Stumberg Roach’s success in the second half of his fight with “Pitbull” Cruz and Zepeda’s string of iffy performances against Tevin Farmer and Shakur Stevenson should give him a decent amount of confidence here. The tools are unquestionably there; the focus to maintain poise in the face of fire, strong combination work inside, and good movement when he decides to use it. His check hook especially looks to be a great weapon considering that Zepeda will occasionally bring his guard up and freeze in anticipation of incoming fire, a habit that allowed Tevin Farmer to angle off of the ropes on multiple occasions. That said, if Zepeda still has the fire after getting the exact sort of fight he wanted from Shakur Stevenson and still falling short, I really like his chances. The issue for Roach is that some of the tools that neutralized Cruz won’t be nearly as effective against “El Camaron.” Roach does have good footwork, yes, but he spent a solid portion of the fight willingly going forehead-to-forehead with “Pitbull,” using the short distance to smother Cruz’s big swings and go to work with tight combinations. Where Cruz leaned on the clinch in close, however, Zepeda excels at getting just enough space to rip body shots. Roach can also be one-note with his head movement, relying largely on just ducking out of danger, and occasionally pulls back in a straight line. That works against a squat headhunter like Cruz, but Zepeda will enjoy a reach advantage and employs significantly more body work. He also, critically, does not slow down the way Cruz does. Roach has a blueprint to follow and the skills to do so, but his habits leave openings for Zepeda’s absurd work rate to offset the crisper shots coming back his way. Considering the former’s recent luck with the judges, that’s got me leaning towards the underdog. Roach vs Zepeda Predictions: Who will win? Scott Christ: Zepeda’s high volume seems like something Roach might struggle against more than Pitbull’s predictable aggression or Tank’s … whatever Tank was doing that night. Zepeda has power, he throws a lot of punches, and he’s hard to deter or demoralize, and I don’t know that Roach can box enough to keep the guy off of him. I think he can do well enough to run it close again, though. I like both of these guys and think this is going to be a good fight, a nice clash of styles and skill sets. I have to think Zepeda is at least a little better against technician types thanks to fighting Farmer and Shakur, but there are such clear ways that I can see both of these guys struggling with this matchup, and that’s what makes it so good. A little part of me is rooting for Roach, because he’s gotten the shaft in his biggest opportunities. But it’s not to root against Zepeda, who is very fun to watch and always gives a big effort. I think Roach will nick this one, but it’ll be debatable again. Lamont Roach by Split Decision Patrick Stumberg: Though I’ll readily admit a bias towards volume punchers, I do genuinely think Zepeda’s non-stop activity is a stronger counter to Roach’s style than Cruz’s front-heavy explosion. Roach will land his fair share of heavy blows, but that willingness to mix it up instead of just sticking and moving plays too much into Zepeda’s strengths. And if that doesn’t sway you, consider this: you can trust Lamont Roach Jr to earn a decision, but can you trust him to actually get it? William Zepeda by Majority Decision

Roach on fighting Zepeda “It’s a wonderful opportunity to fight one of the best fighters in the weight class. For so long Zepeda has been the #1 contender in a few sanctioning bodies and that’s something that we paid attention to. Once the opportunity came to fight for the WBC world championship, of course I said yes.” Roach on why this is a potential Fight of the Year contender “I think because what I present in the ring, I have a bundle of skills. I have a ton of will, heart like a lion, and cojones like Godzilla. And William Zepeda does as well so it’s going to be a hell of a clash and we can’t wait to see how it turns out, Saturday night.” Zepeda on facing Roach “I know a lot of you guys in the press, you want action, you want trash talking. But we know Lamont, he’s respectful outside of the ring but when he’s inside that ring he’s a monster, he’s a beast, and I’m the same way. It’s going to be war on Saturday.”
